Why Your Tomatoes Stopped Producing in the Heat (And How to Fix It)

You planted your tomatoes in spring, watched them grow like they had something to prove, and then just when everything seemed to be going well, the flowers started drying up and dropping off. Maybe you are still seeing flowers, but they disappear before becoming anything. Maybe the plant itself looks completely fine, green and healthy, but production has just stopped.
This is one of the most common mid-season frustrations for tomato growers, and it happens to beginners and experienced gardeners alike. The cause is almost always heat, and understanding exactly what the heat is doing to your plant changes how you respond to it.
What Is Actually Happening Inside the Plant
Here is the thing most people do not know: tomatoes are not tropical plants. They like warmth, but they have a specific temperature window where they thrive. Tomatoes like warm weather, between 65 and 85 degrees. When temperatures soar past 95, they stop growing. In that kind of heat, their flowers fail to pollinate and instead dry up and drop off, putting a pause on the production of new fruit.
The specific mechanism is in the pollen. A tomato flower is self-pollinating, meaning it has both male and female parts and pollinates itself through wind movement. But that process has a narrow window. Tomatoes produce new flowers frequently, and these flowers have a 50-hour window in which they can be pollinated. When tomatoes are exposed to sustained hot temperatures — more than 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 70 degrees Fahrenheit at night — the tomato plant becomes stressed and depletes its energy stores. This changes the flowers, making it harder for them to be pollinated, and the blossom often drops without pollination occurring.
What this means in practice is that the beautiful green plant in front of you is not failing. It pushed out flowers when it had the energy to do so. The heat just made that pollen nonviable before pollination could happen. The flower had no future fruit in it, and the plant shed it.
Nighttime temperatures matter just as much as daytime highs, often more. When nights remain above 75 degrees Fahrenheit, tomato plants cannot recover from the day's heat. Respiration continues at a high rate throughout the night, using energy that would otherwise support flowering and fruit production. In Texas, where nighttime temperatures in July and August regularly stay in the high 70s, this is exactly what is happening to most tomato plants across the state.
Why Your Tomatoes Are Dropping Flowers Instead of Setting Fruit
The blossom drop you are seeing is not a disease, not a nutrient deficiency, and not something you did wrong. It is the plant protecting itself. Pollen becomes sterile. Pollination fails. Fertilization never occurs. The plant conserves energy by shedding flowers. Once temperatures moderate, flowering usually resumes.
Several days of nighttime temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit or daytime temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit will cause the plants to abort flowers. Under these temperatures the pollen becomes tacky and nonviable, preventing proper pollination from taking place. High humidity makes this worse. Humidity conditions above 70 percent can also make pollen too sticky to be moved around by the wind. Since tomatoes are largely self-pollinated, having complete flowers with both male and female parts, wind alone is usually sufficient to shake the pollen to the female parts and cause pollination.
There is one more thing worth understanding: the damage from a heat wave shows up in your garden before you see the results of it. According to Penn State Extension, when high temperatures hit 7 to 15 days before flowering, aborted and dropped flowers are the likely result. So the plant you are watching shed flowers today was actually affected by heat from one to two weeks ago.
What to Do Right Now
Step 1: Stop Trying to Force Fruit Set
The most common mistake when tomatoes stop producing is trying to override the heat by adding fertilizer or using blossom set sprays. Both backfire. Heavy nitrogen fertilizer pushes lush green growth, not fruit. Blossom set sprays are designed for cold-induced spring drop where pollination failed due to low temperatures, not for heat, where the problem is sterile pollen that the spray cannot fix. Forced fruit set without viable pollination produces hollow, misshapen, or seedy fruit that is not worth the effort.
Hold off on fertilizing and spraying. The plant does not need to be pushed right now. It needs to be kept alive and healthy until conditions improve.
Step 2: Water Deeply and Consistently
Moisture stress compounds heat stress dramatically. A tomato plant fighting both drought and extreme heat sheds flowers at a higher rate than one that is well-watered. Water deeply at the base of the plant, not overhead, and do it in the early morning. You want the soil to stay consistently moist all the way through the root zone, not just at the surface. Check by pushing your finger two to three inches into the soil. If it is dry, water. If it is still moist, wait.
For North Texas and other hot-climate gardens where temperatures push above 100 degrees, check soil moisture daily during heat waves. Raised beds and containers dry out significantly faster than in-ground beds and may need watering morning and evening during the most extreme stretches.
Step 3: Mulch the Root Zone
If you have not mulched already, do it now. Three inches of straw or wood chips around the base of every tomato plant insulates the root zone from surface heat, slows evaporation dramatically, and keeps the soil temperature more stable. The goal is to protect the roots from heat spikes at the soil surface, which can reach temperatures far above ambient air temperature in an unmulched bed.
Step 4: Provide Afternoon Shade if Possible
Temporary shade during the hottest part of the day does not reduce production. In extreme heat, it actually helps maintain the kind of temperatures where some flower viability is preserved. A piece of 30 percent density shade cloth suspended over the plant during the worst afternoon heat gives a meaningful buffer. Even an outdoor umbrella positioned to block the 2 to 5 p.m. sun can help during a heat wave.
Step 5: Wait for the Weather to Change
This is the hardest step for most gardeners, but it is the most important one. When temperatures get this high, the best thing a gardener can do is keep the plants irrigated and wait for more favorable growing temperatures to arrive.
Most tomato plants will resume setting fruit once daytime temperatures drop back below 90 degrees and nights fall below 70. In Texas, that usually happens in late September and into October. Most tomato cultivars can make up for this setback of low fruit production with increased flower formation once it cools a bit. The plant is not done. It is waiting.
Do not pull your tomato plants in August because they stopped producing. Keep them alive, keep them mulched and watered, and watch them push a strong second flush in the fall.
Varieties That Handle Heat Better
Not all tomatoes are equally sensitive to heat. If you plan to grow tomatoes through a Texas summer or in any consistently hot climate, variety selection matters enormously.
Cherry tomatoes are significantly more heat-tolerant than large slicing varieties. Smaller tomatoes like cherry tomatoes have a wider range of temperatures in which they will continue to produce, so you probably will not see as much of a break in production with them. Grape tomatoes behave similarly.
For larger varieties, look specifically for heat-tolerant labels on the tag. Solar Fire, Heatmaster, and Celebrity are widely recommended for Texas and other hot-climate gardens. These varieties are specifically bred to set fruit at higher temperatures than standard varieties and are worth seeking out if you want summer tomato production and not just a fall flush.
The Honest Bottom Line
Your tomato plant stopped producing because the heat made its pollen sterile. That is biology, not failure. The plant is alive, the root system is intact, and it will produce again. Your job right now is to keep it healthy, not to fix something that cannot be fixed with a spray bottle or a bag of fertilizer.
Water deeply. Mulch everything. Provide shade if you can. And wait. The fall tomato flush in Texas is real, and the plants you kept alive through August are the ones that give it to you.
