If your hens have been reliable all spring and then slowed down noticeably once the real heat arrived, you are not imagining it. Egg production in summer is a real, documented, and frustrating phenomenon for backyard chicken keepers, especially in places like Texas where the heat does not just get warm, it gets punishing.
The good news is that this is not a mystery or a sign that something is permanently wrong with your flock. It is biology, and once you understand the specific reasons it happens, most of the fixes are practical and affordable. Some of them just take a few minutes a day. Here is what is actually going on inside your hens and exactly what to do about it.
What Summer Heat Does to a Laying Hen
Before getting into the fixes, it helps to understand the mechanism, because the cause of reduced production is not just one thing. It is a chain reaction.
Chickens do not sweat. They cool themselves entirely through panting, which evaporates moisture from their respiratory tract, and by holding their wings away from their body to release heat through their skin. When temperatures push above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, that system starts to be insufficient. Above 95 degrees, the situation becomes significantly more stressful. In Texas, where July and August can lock in temperatures well above 100 degrees for days at a time, even healthy, well-kept birds are working hard just to stay cool.
Here is how that connects to your empty egg cartons.
Panting is physically demanding and uses energy. When a hen is spending significant energy on thermoregulation, she has less to spend on egg production. But the more direct cause is what happens to her appetite. A hot chicken does not want to eat. Her body naturally suppresses appetite in the heat, partly because digestion itself generates body heat, which is the last thing she needs more of on a 105-degree afternoon. Feed consumption during extreme heat waves will likely go down because a hot chicken will have a decreased appetite.
Eggs are made from nutrients. Specifically, protein builds the egg white and calcium builds the shell. A hen eating significantly less feed is consuming fewer of the building blocks needed to make an egg every 25 hours. The math is straightforward. Less feed, fewer eggs, and the eggs that do come out often have thinner shells.
There is a hormonal component as well. Heat is a physiological stressor, and stress triggers cortisol release. Cortisol directly suppresses the hormones responsible for triggering ovulation in hens. A hen under enough stress can shut down production even when she is physically capable of laying, not because something is wrong with her reproductive system, but because her body has decided conditions are not right.
One particularly important finding from research at Kansas State University: hens deprived of water for even 24 to 72 hours during heat stress can take up to two months to fully recover and return to normal egg production. The effects of water deprivation in summer are far more sustained and serious than most keepers realize.
Why Eggshell Quality Drops Too
If your summer eggs are coming out with thin, soft, or rougher shells, that is directly tied to the panting your hens are doing. When a hen pants heavily, she exhales carbon dioxide faster than normal. This raises her blood pH, which interferes with the body's ability to use calcium for eggshell formation. The result is reduced shell quality even when you are offering plenty of oyster shell on the side.
This is not something you can fix by adding more calcium. The issue is at the metabolic level and resolves when the hen's body temperature stabilizes. The best approach is reducing heat stress overall, which restores normal blood chemistry and eggshell formation.
What to Do Right Now
Water First, Everything Else Second
If there is one thing that will make the biggest difference in your summer egg production, it is water management. Not shade cloth or frozen treats, though those help. Water.
Hens need cool, fresh water available at all times. During a Texas heat wave, water in a metal or dark-colored waterer left in partial sun can reach temperatures that are essentially warm to the touch by midday. Warm water does not provide the cooling effect hens need, and birds will drink less of it.
Move waterers to the shadiest part of the run. Check and refresh water multiple times a day during the hottest stretch. Freeze water bottles overnight and float them in the waterer to keep the temperature down for several hours at a time. Add a second water station if you only have one, and place it in a completely different location so subordinate birds have access without competing for the same source.
Time Feed Strategically
Since hot hens do not want to eat during the hottest part of the day, work with that biology rather than against it. Offer layer feed in the early morning before temperatures climb, and again in the late evening after they drop. These are the windows when hens are most willing to eat. Feeding hens layer rations in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower will aid in increasing feed consumption and help maintain the nutrition level they need to keep producing.
Limit scratch and high-energy treats during peak heat. Scratch grains are sometimes called internal warming treats for good reason. Digesting them generates significant body heat, which is exactly what you do not want to add in 100-degree weather. Save them for winter.
Offer hydrating treats strategically. Frozen watermelon, cucumber slices, and frozen berries are high in water content, cooling, and genuinely loved by chickens. They help with hydration without filling the hens up on non-nutritive food the way scratch does. Freezing these treats into an ice block gives birds something to work on during the hottest afternoon hours.
Prioritize Shade and Airflow
A patch of shade that disappears by noon is not shade during the critical 1 to 5 p.m. window. Walk your run in the early afternoon and observe where actual shade falls during peak heat. If your birds are in full sun during that window, shade cloth at 50 to 70 percent density or a solid cover over the run changes their experience significantly.
Shade alone helps but ventilation compounds the effect. A shaded, still, enclosed coop on a 105-degree day builds up radiant heat from the walls and roof. Moving air in that space matters. Open vents, add a box fan that pushes air through rather than just circulating it, and if your coop has a metal roof, that surface absorbs and radiates heat all day. A coat of white or silver paint on a metal roof can reduce interior coop temperature noticeably.
Keep the Coop Clean During Summer
Heat and moisture together accelerate the decomposition of droppings, which generates its own heat inside the coop. Deep wet litter in summer is not just unpleasant, it adds to the ambient temperature the birds are trying to manage. Clean more frequently in summer than you would in other seasons. Keep bedding dry and remove wet areas before they compound the problem.
What to Expect and What Is Normal
A production drop of 10 to 20 percent during sustained periods above 85 degrees is normal and expected. Some hens will slow down more than others depending on breed, age, and body weight. Heavier breeds and older hens are generally more sensitive to heat than lighter breeds and younger birds.
Production does not typically recover immediately when temperatures moderate. There is a lag period of a few days to a week before the biological system restores itself and eggs appear again consistently. If you have been managing water, shade, and nutrition appropriately throughout the heat event, that recovery is faster than for flocks that experienced significant water or nutrition deprivation during the worst days.
If your production has dropped dramatically, meaning more than 30 to 40 percent, and heat management looks solid, it is worth checking for molt, illness, or a predator disturbance at night that you may not have noticed. All three cause production drops that look identical to heat-related drops from the outside.
Quick-Win Checklist for Summer Production
- Refresh water at least twice a day and move waterers to full shade
- Float frozen water bottles in the waterer during peak heat
- Feed layer rations in the early morning and late evening, not midday
- Cut back on scratch and high-starch treats until temperatures drop
- Make sure shade covers the run from 1 to 5 p.m., not just morning shade
- Run a fan through the coop during the hottest hours
- Offer frozen fruit and vegetable treats in the afternoon
- Keep oyster shell available free-choice for calcium supplementation
- Clean the coop more frequently to reduce litter-generated heat
- Collect eggs at least twice daily since heat degrades egg quality rapidly
