The only thing standing between most beginners and a steady supply of homemade compost is a place to put it. Commercial compost bins are expensive, often too small to be practical, and tend to look exactly like what they are. Building your own takes an afternoon, costs a fraction of the price, and gives you a structure sized for what you actually need.

This guide gives you two options depending on your space and budget, walks you through building each one step by step, and covers the mistakes that cause most compost setups to fail or stall.


Before You Build: Picking the Right Option for Your Space

There is no single best compost bin. The right one depends on how much space you have, how much material you generate, and how much you want to invest upfront.

Option 1: The Wire Mesh Bin Best for beginners with limited space or a tight budget. This is the simplest structure possible: a circular or square cage made from hardware cloth or welded wire fencing. It holds a working compost pile, keeps material contained, and costs very little to make. Total cost is usually under twenty dollars. Build time is about 30 minutes.

Option 2: The Three-Sided Pallet Bin Best for households with a larger yard and more volume of yard waste, garden trimmings, and kitchen scraps. Four to five free pallets assembled into a three-sided or four-sided structure make a bin that holds significantly more material and is easy to access for turning. Pallets are free at most hardware stores, home improvement centers, and local businesses. Build time is one to two hours.

Both need the same minimum size to work properly. A bin that is smaller than three feet wide by three feet tall will not generate enough internal heat to decompose material efficiently. The size minimum is not negotiable. A bin that is too small compostes slowly, may not heat at all, and is more vulnerable to moisture and pest problems.


Building Option 1: The Wire Mesh Bin

What you need:

  • 10 to 12 feet of hardware cloth or welded wire fencing, 3 to 4 feet tall
  • Wire cutters
  • 4 to 6 wire ties or zip ties
  • Two wooden stakes or rebar posts (optional, for added stability)

Step 1: Choose your location. Pick a spot with some sun exposure, good drainage, and reasonable access to a water source. A sunny spot provides heat that accelerates decomposition. Avoid placing the bin against a wooden fence or structure, which can absorb moisture and rot over time. Do not place it directly under a tree, whose roots will grow into the pile and whose leaves will acidify it.

Step 2: Cut and form the wire. Cut your length of hardware cloth or fencing using wire cutters. Form it into a cylinder by bending it into a circle and connecting the two ends together with wire ties or zip ties every six to eight inches. Stand it upright. The cylinder should be at least three feet in diameter and three feet tall.

Step 3: Secure it if needed. If your soil is soft or you live in a windy area, push one or two wooden stakes or rebar posts through the wire and into the ground to keep the structure from tipping. In most situations the cylinder is stable enough on its own.

Step 4: Start filling. Place a four to six inch layer of coarse brown material directly on the bare soil at the base. Your bin should sit on bare ground, not concrete or pavers, so beneficial organisms from the soil can move up into the pile. That ground contact is part of what makes the system work.

To open the bin for turning, simply unclip the wire ties at one seam and unfold the cylinder. Re-form it around the turned pile and re-clip.


Building Option 2: The Three-Sided Pallet Bin

What you need:

  • 3 to 4 wooden pallets of similar size
  • 6 to 8 carriage bolts with nuts and washers (3/8 inch diameter, 3 to 4 inches long)
  • A drill with a 3/8 inch bit
  • A rubber mallet or hammer
  • Optional: hardware cloth or chicken wire to line the interior walls

Step 1: Source your pallets. Most pallets are free. Ask at home improvement stores, feed stores, hardware stores, or grocery distribution centers. Look for pallets stamped with HT, which stands for heat treated. Avoid pallets stamped MB, which indicates methyl bromide treatment and is not safe for use in a garden compost setting.

Step 2: Choose your location. Same principles as above. Bare soil, accessible, with some sun. For a pallet bin, leave a few feet of working space in front of the open face so you can get a pitchfork or shovel in easily.

Step 3: Assemble the back wall and two sides. Stand one pallet upright as the back wall. Bring a second pallet to one side of it, perpendicular, forming an L shape. Drill two to three holes through the overlapping edges of the two pallets and secure them with carriage bolts, nuts, and washers. Repeat with a third pallet on the other side to form a U shape.

If you have a fourth pallet, you can attach it as a removable front wall using two bolts on one side and leaving the other side unattached so it functions as a door. This keeps material contained but lets you open the front for easy turning and access.

Step 4: Line the interior (optional but helpful). Staple gun hardware cloth or chicken wire to the inside walls of the pallet bin if there are large gaps between the pallet slats. This keeps material inside the bin rather than falling out through the sides and reduces the attractiveness of the bin to rodents looking for an entry point.

Step 5: Start filling the same way as the wire bin. Brown material on the bare soil first, then alternate green and brown layers as you add material over time.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

Building too small. This is the single most common compost bin mistake. A bin smaller than three feet in each dimension will not heat properly, will decompose very slowly, and will attract more pests than a properly sized pile. Build to the minimum dimension even if it feels larger than you need.

Placing the bin on concrete or pavers. Compost needs contact with soil to work at its best. The beneficial organisms that drive decomposition come from the ground. A bin placed on a hard surface cuts off that contact and performs significantly worse.

Only adding kitchen scraps with no browns. A pile of kitchen scraps without adequate brown material gets wet, slimy, and smells bad. Every time you add green material, add a layer of brown material on top. Dry leaves, cardboard torn into pieces, straw, and paper bags all qualify.

Forgetting to add moisture. A dry pile does not decompose. The material should feel like a wrung-out sponge throughout. In Texas summers, a wire bin in full sun can dry out within days. Check moisture weekly and water if the pile feels dry when you push your hand into the center.

Ignoring the pile for months. Cold composting without turning works, but it is slow. Raw fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, garden trimmings, dried leaves, cardboard, and paper are all fair game.
